The Rod Rule
Think of the laser as the ceiling. The rod reads how far the ground is from that ceiling. Bigger number = ground is lower = too deep.

Common Mistakes — Don't Do This
✗ Reading the rod upside down
✓ Numbers always read from bottom up. Smallest number is closest to the laser.
✗ Not plumbing the rod
✓ Hold the rod perfectly straight up. A tilted rod gives a false reading every time.
✗ Reading on soft ground
✓ If the rod base is sinking, your reading is off. Find solid ground or use a rod plate.
✗ Ignoring the bubble
✓ The level bubble on the rod must be centered before you call out a reading.
